BAGO
It is situated only 80 km away from Yangon (2- hour
drive). Having been an ancient royal capital of Mon Kingdom in
15th century, Bago (Pegu) is now one of the archaeological sites
in Myanmar. Tourist attractions in Bago are Shwemawdaw Pagoda,
Shwetharlyaung Pagoda (massive reclining Buddha image), Kyaik
Pun Pagoda (Four faces Pagoda), Kalyani Sima (Ordination Hall),
Hinthargone, Kyakhat wine Monastery, Sete Village, Myathar
Lyaung, Shwegugyi & Shwegulay and Mahazedi. Also recommended is
a visit to the Place of king Bayinnaung, time permitting. Bago
is worth a day's excursion from Yangon.
TAUNGOO
Toungoo lies in the northernmost past of the Pago Division,
adjoining Mandalay division and Kayin State. It was founded as a
kingdom during the Taunggoo dynasty round about 15th century. It
is situated about 280 km (7 hour drive) from Yangon. Taunggoo is
the main center of teak production in Myanmar. Places of
interest are Shwesandaw, Myazigon Pagoda and Ruins of the palace
wall. While in Taungoo don't miss taking the trip to the
Elephant camp in the Bago Yoma mountain ranges to see the
working elephants.
