MAWLAMYINE
Mawlamyine, a charming town, is the capital of Mon State,
situated at the mouth of the Thaniwin River. It is easily
accessible by road and rail from Yangon. Sites to see in
Mawlamyine are Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, Uzena Pagoda, Gaung Zey
Kyung, Queen Seindom monastery and Caves of Kawgun famous for
its countless Buddha images. Kyaikkhami Pagoda, perched on the
rocks by the sea and joined to the land by a covered causeway,
is the main attraction. About 34 km from Mawlamyine is
Thanbyuzayat, an Allied War Memorial Cemetery for the prisoners
of war during the Second World War, who lost their lives in the
construction of the famous Death Railway across the River Kwai.
On the way back to Thanbyuzayat you can visit Pha-Auk
International Meditation Center. Win Sein Meditation Center is
also one of the famous meditation centers in Myanmar. Inside
this compound stands the biggest reclining Buddha Image in the
world, over 200 meters long. Dawei, Myeik and Kawthaung are the
famous towns on the Taninthayi Coast.
BELIN
It is one of the mysterious lands of with many old historical
monuments as Buddha Images and Stupas. Kyikehtisaung Sayadaw(
venerable monk) and his monastery are very well known spot for
local people. There are many old stone Buddha Images in Zotethup
village. It was discovered by the Sayadaw last 30 years ago.
THAHTONE
It is believed to have been the place where Buddhism started
in Myanmar. It was an ancient capital of former Mon kingdom and
also known as Suvanabhumi. It is situated on the main road from
Bago to Motama, 367 km away from Yangon, accessible by rail and
road from Yangon.
