Myanmar Culture & Nature
KYAIKHTIYO (Golden Rock)
Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda, over 1100 m above sea-level, is situated
about 160 km (5 hour drive) from Yangon. It is one of the most
visited places in Myanmar. This mystical pagoda stands on a gold
gilded boulder precariously perching on the edge of the cliff
and it seems to be standing against the force of gravity. This
boulder is supposed to have been placed by the king of the Devas
(celestial king) according to the legend of the pagoda. There
are two highly satisfying trips to this pagoda from the foot of
the hill (Kinpun base camp). One of them is an 11 km up-hill
climb from the footpath and another one is an hour-drive up-hill
by open truck cars to the foot of Mount Hermit from where it is
a 45 minute-climb on foot to the peak. With the pleasure of
Kyaikhtiyo climbing from the footpath, you can have a pleasure
derived from the local pilgrims there. While in Yangon, time
permitting after visiting Yangon’s highlights, don't miss making
an excursion to Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda. Two day trip from Yangon by
car to this pagoda is more convenient to tourists.
KAYIN STATE
PHA-AN
Pha-an is the capital of Kayin state. Situated on the bank of
Thanlwin River, visitors can reach by road from Yangon across a
bridge over the Thanlwin River and by river ferry from

religious sites in Pha-an. Mt. Zwekabin rising to the high of
722 m is the landmark of Phaan and Kayin state, offering
panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the summit.
But there are many other historical places like Sadansinmin
Cave, Kawkathaung cave, Bayintnyi cave & spring, Kyaukkalat
pagoda and monastery, Shweyin Myaw Pagoda, land mark of the
town. Many famous venerable monks have already appeared in that
area. Among them, Thamanya Sayadaw was the most popular in the
state and outside too.
MYAWADY
It is a border- town on the eastern side of the state between
Myanmar –Thailand border. It is the main gate way for border
tradition with Thailand. Famous Shweminwon Pagoda and Mekyaung
kone monastery are the highlights of the town.
