Golfers’ Greens in Myanmar, More Than a Dream

Playing golf is not the Myanmar’s origin, but the British introduced it for a long time, not later than other countries.
The oldest golf courses in Myanmar are Andaman Golf Club and Thayet Golf Club built contemporarily. Thus, there is a saying goes: “Golfing in Myanmar is truly as oldies as goodies”.

Andaman Golf Club

It was built by the British during early 1900 for recreation. It is in excellent playable condition. It is situated in the southern-most of Myanmar.

Thayet Golf Club

It is one of the oldest golf club built by the British in the early 1900, and is situated in Thayet City on the west bank if Ayeyarwaddy River. It was the seat of British Administration for lower Bruma. The opposite city is Aung Lan City named after Major Allan from the British Army. Today, it is renamed its Myanmar’s, Myaytae City. Unlike Andaman Golf Club, it is not in excellent playable condition. Nevertheless, it is said that a golfer can gain a chance to get free in green fees of Saint Andrew Golf Course in Scotland, U.K., if he is a member of Thayet Golf Club in Myanmar.

There are some more golf clubs as follows:

In Yangon:
  • Yangon golf club
  • Mingalardon Golf Club
  • The Defense Services Golf Club
  • Pan Hlaing Golf Club
  • YCDC Golf Club
  • Okkala Golf Club
  • Ye Mon Golf Club
In Mandalay:
  • Yedagun Taung Golf Club
In Bagan:
  • Bagan Golf Club
In Taunggyi:
  • Ayetharyar Golf Club

Yangon Golf Club

It is established in 1909. It has a long history and is the nearest golf club with 18-hole invited for the Asian PGA tour.

Pun Hlaing Golf Club

The finest golf course in Myanmar is established in 2000 designed by Gary Player. Its greens are the best including 18-hole.

YCDC Golf Club

It is built by Yangon City Development Council (YCDC) and provided by some facilities: fine restaurant, swimming pool, billiard & snooker and other modern accessibility. It is the second best golf club with 36-hole because it is compounded of two golf clubs in a place. One of the golf courses there, Ngwe Thawdar (The Silver) course was established in 1994. It has wider fairways and fairly large green suitable to players with the aid of modern facility.

Yedagun Taung Golf Club

It was recently built in the valley of the northern hills in 1990. It is a challenging spot for players owing to its long and narrow fairway, small but quick running greens. It shows that playing golf is not an easy sport but a good exercise for the movement of the whole body. As “The longer belt, the shorter life”, it might have been difficult for player with big stomach.

Bagan Golf Club

It has come to existence in 1990. Amidst of 11th century old ruins, it is an oasis for players in the dry zone, and the compare and contrast of the past and the present. Looking back to 11th century, there might have been playing Guli sport, Myanmar Polo, in this region. Thus, although golf is not as Myanmar’s origin, Guli sport dared to compare to Polo sport as contemporary of that time.

Ayetharyar Golf Club

It is established in 1995 amidst the Shan Plateau. The course has a challenging per 72 with 7380 yards with perfect cut of Bhamuda grass with rather large greens.
